The Art of Low-Impact Corporate Festivals: How We Partner with Landowners to Build Real Connection

By Pete, Founder at The Soul Camp

When people think of bringing a company out into the countryside for an event, two very different images usually come to mind.

The first is the traditional ‘corporate circus’, cars and trucks tearing up turf, endless plastic waste, and rigid marquees. Not to mention the late-night noise from unmanaged sound systems…

20 years ago, while we were still cutting our teeth in the world of corporate festivals in the UK, we took a booking for what was described as “a quiet film shoot for a romantic movie.”

Yeah, sure…

It turned out to be a scene featuring a well-known actress whose ex-boyfriend character discovers where she’s glamping (at one of our productions). He roars down the field in a luxury 4×4, and executes a full handbrake stop-skid thing, right beside her tent.

Back then, we hadn’t yet established our strict policy of always having a dedicated Crew member on-site during the rig (and the event and derig). I returned from a break (enjoying a pint and a pasty in the local pub! OK I admit it!) to discover they had taken seven takes of the skid. Worse still, a massive tech crew and a heavy truck were parked on the grass.

The land would recover eventually, but on heavy clay soil, those 4×4 skid ruts run deep and turn into concrete during summer. A genuine hazard for livestock and a nightmare for future guests.

We learned fast that film crews can be hum… assertive

I stepped in and made it clear the retakes had to stop immediately to protect our Landowner Partner’s land. I gently pointed out that their ‘extraordinarily expensive, hourly-billed, massively heavy tech trucks’ (with road tyres!) might need our Landowner Partner’s tractor to pull them out of the field, as the drizzle had started.

Yep, that worked!

From Mistakes to the “Curator” Model

That single experience changed one of our operational models forever. Today, we view ourselves as Curators of Extraordinary Corporate Festivals.

We realised that to create genuine social cohesion and social capital for our corporate clients, and to be aligned with our ethos. We have to protect the land, and support our Landowner Partners and clients with equal intensity. The “Curator” approach means working intimately with all entities, so everyone wins. So now:

  • 100% On-Site Crew Management: No third-party crew sets foot on a partner’s land without a pre-agreed logistics plan.
  • Low-Impact & Zero-Trace Setup: We use modular, off-grid infrastructure. Designed to leave land in the same state as it was when we started the production.
  • Curated Corporate Clients: We host forward-thinking companies who come to build trust and celebrate their people, not rowdy party crowds.

When you combine our 20+ years of experience and our ethos of care for people and Nature, the client results speak for themselves:

“The feedback has been exceptional. The Chill Bar became a true hub for people to re-connect and chill–which is exactly how you positioned it. Glamping was a new thing for us and there were a lot of nerves around it, but you proved us all wrong!”. Red Bull (270 Guests, Hertfordshire)

“Totally jumping on the bandwagon to express how amazing the FatFace conference was. I have been to many conferences over the years with other businesses, but never experienced an event quite like this!”. FatFace (300 Guests, Northamptonshire)
